Plyometric mats are rubber mats with a very similar material to a track surface. This makes them ideal for bounding, plyometric and footwork exercises - much better than rubber jigsaw-style mats. They are hardwearing, grip to the floor well and can withstand heavy use with track spikes.
An example plyometric running exercise is to set the mats about 1.5m apart on a track, over a suitable distance (say 30m). The athlete runs placing a foot on the mat and the next stride foot lands on the standard track surface. The technical logic is that the raised mat alters the standard biomechanical curve but at a higher speed than conventional running.
