View full detailsTraining javelins let athletes work on technique, rhythm and release without the cost or demands of a competition javelin. The range here covers young throwers just starting out through to experienced athletes, so schools, clubs and coaches can find something suited to the session they have planned. Our javelin FAQs explain javelin weights by age category and gender if you are unsure where to start.
The Polanik Training Javelin is a robust javelin ideally suited to multiple throws, and it comes in weights from 400g to 800g. Nemeth and Nordic also make javelins that suit training and newer throwers, and you can browse their full ranges in our Nemeth javelins and Nordic javelins collections.
The Petranoff Turbojavelin, available in 300g and 400g, is a great way to introduce javelin to young athletes. The Javee Training Aid, in 600g and 800g, is a strength training device rather than a throwing implement, so it is a useful addition to a javelin athlete’s conditioning work.
Javelin balls are a key part of technical training, and our range covers a wide choice of types and weights, from 400g up to 1.5kg.
The Gripped Javelin Throwing Ball is suited to introducing younger throwers to javelin technique. The Hard PVC Coated Javelin Throwing Ball has a small diameter, so it can be held with the correct javelin grip. The Vinex PVC Javelin Throwing Ball is suited to training, including indoors. For heavier work, the Cast Javelin Throwing Ball is a solid iron ball for throwing into the arc or a net.
The weight you choose depends on the athlete and the purpose of the session. Gripped, PVC and hard PVC coated balls come in weights from 400g to 1kg, and the cast ball goes up to 1.5kg. Your coach’s programme should guide the progression, and if you would like a second opinion, get in touch and we will help you choose.
Weighted balls also suit throwing drills that build power through the legs, trunk and shoulders. For slams, rotational throws and general conditioning, see our medicine balls and training balls.
Javelin training doesn’t have to stop when the weather turns. The Javelin Head Disc For Training fits the javelin tip for throwing indoors into a net, and the Vortex Whizz Ball / Mega Howler is a training aid gripped and thrown with a javelin action. Throwing balls can be used for outdoor work too, so a session can move between the two as needed.
Starting javelin well matters, and lighter implements help young athletes build good technique before moving up to a full competition javelin. The Turbojavelin and the gripped javelin throwing ball above are both aimed at introducing younger throwers, and our Schools Throwing range covers equipment for school sessions. For advice on teaching javelin to beginners, our javelin FAQs are a good place to start.
When your athletes are ready to move on, browse our full javelin throw collection, or go straight to competition javelins. Our guide to choosing a new javelin explains what to look for, and our javelin bags and accessories and grip products cover the rest of the kit. For other events, see our full throws equipment range.
